OPERATING SYSTEM

         OPERATING SYSTEM

An operating system is a program which acts as an interface between user of a computer and the computer hardware. The purpose of an operating system is to provide an environment in which a user may execute programs.
An operating system is an important part of almost every computer system. A computer system can be roughly divided into four components.
ðŸ‘‰ The hardware (CPU, Memory, I/O devices)
   ðŸ‘‰ The operating system.
   ðŸ‘‰ The application programs.
   ðŸ‘‰ The users

  COMPONENTS OF COMPUTER SYSTEM

Computer hardware is at innermost level. Operating system is at outer level to that of computer hardware. Application program are at outer level to that of operating system. User forms the outermost level. Users can interact to computer hardware through application programs and operating system.

Operating system works as a resource allocator. The resources like CPU time, memory space, file storage space, I/O devices, are allocated to the programs and users by operating system. An operating system can be viewed as a control program. It controls the execution of user programs to prevent errors and improper use of the computer.

Operating system eliminate duplicate efforts in development of complicated routine. Once these routines are developed by system developer, application program can make use of it.
